A gusting cold wind blows across an empty California landscape and races through the cottonwoods just coming into new leaf. Late afternoon, clouds forming and displacing the sun that shone just a short while ago. Now, there  may be some rain. You climb the rocky hillside to get a view of the dramatic vista, stepping around outcrops of boulder and shrub. Tread carefully, there are rattlers here, coming awake, sheltering against the wind that’s displaced the sun just minutes ago.
